Southwold - After the Storm
During the week, there were some very high tides which caused some flooding and damage in Southwold. The water had come up so high that it blocked the A12 at Blythburgh on Friday and Saturday, so we did not even attempt to get to Southwold until after we had seen Ipswich beat Huddersfield 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. This morning, we went for a walk to the harbour. The footpath was not as wet as we had expected it to be – just a bit ‘claggy’ in the words of another walker. As we approached the bridge over the river to the Walberswick side, we could clearly see that the marshes were under a lot of water. The Harbour Inn was still closed – all of the furniture have been taken out before the high tides. As we walked towards the beach, we could see that the footpath on the Walberswick side had been washed away in places, and so it was not possible to walk down to Walberswick beside the river. When we walked along the beach, everything appeared to be fine – other than a lot of rubbish that had been brought up onto the beach, and some wood near the harbour, which turned out to be a bit of someone’s beach hut. However, as we got nearer to town, we saw that many of the beach huts had been lifted off their footings, and as the photo shows, some were much more damaged than that.
