Winterton Seals
This year we have made two trips to see the seals at Winterton. The first we made early in December, when there were loads of seals on the beach, most with a pup. The second we made yesterday, when there were far fewer seals, and the pups were largely on the beach on their own, and most of them had grown a lot bigger. There were also more casualties left on the beach yesterday. There were over 500 seals with pups on the beach this year. The seals give birth and then suckle the pups for the first three weeks. Then the adults return to the sea, leaving the pups to convert all the milk they have drunk into fat to grow, and then they too dive into the sea.
