A Beached Seal
On a few occasions we have seem a seal in the sea at Southwold. Yesterday, sitting in the cafe on Southold pier yesterday, we saw a lot of people gathering on the sea wall looking onto the beach. We went to see what was happening, and saw a seal pup beached on the sand. The seal pup was able to roll a little, and also to sit up and look around, but seemed unable to move and certainly was not able to get back into the sea. I took a few photos, before the RSPCA came to rescue the seal. The RSPCA man came with a big cage. He came up behind the seal and threw a towel over its head, before picking it up and putting it straight into the cage which he then carried off the beach and put it into the back of his van. He was very good and let people have a look at the seal and take some pictures before he took it off to the seal sanctuary. He said that the adult seal was in the sea just off the beach, but would not come onto the land with so many people about, and therefore that the best thing was to take the pup away and feed it up before releasing it later.
